The
casts on sale in the Archaeological Receipts Fund shops are
ALL ACCOMPANIED BY NUMBERED CERTIFICATES QUARANTINING THEIR AUTHENTICITY,
on
production of which they may be taken out of Greece, & also by a brief
history of the original work in English, French, German & Greek.
The
casts-faithful copies of
exhibits in Greek Archaeological
Museums -are
decorative items of undoubted aesthetic quality, & serve as specific points
of reference to specific moments of past time. They are symbols
of old, once powerful deities, dedications by humble believers,
functional objects associated with everyday life, to which the passage
of the centuries has lent the gravity of memory. Their presence in the
workplace or home is a link with that most precious possession, our
cultural heritage.
The making of casts began in the state-owned workshops in 1893, the year
of the
National Archaeological Museum in Athens,
& originally had a scholarly & educational purpose. The outstanding quality
of the copies, however, led to their production on a wider scale, & with
the additional, more general aim of disseminating & promoting ancient
Greek art.
To this end, the Archaeological Receipts Fund established workshops to
make the casts-copies, & opened a display & salesroom in the National
Archaeological Museum.
Today you can find all the workshop's faithful copies at
Art of Greece.
